We have constituted an international network of institutes or groups promoting interactions between science and history and philosophy of science (HPS). The members of this network organize many different activities in common: joint conferences, publications, exchanges of students and faculty members, etc.
Arizona State
The Center for Biology and Society at the Arizona State University promotes research, education, and engagement related to study of the life sciences and their interconnections with society. The team around the center’s director Jane Maienschein specializes in the history and philosophy of biology (especially embryology, genetics, and cell biology) and the way biology, bioethics, and bio-policy play out in society.
Bielefeld
The Philosophy Department at Bielefeld University is among the leading philosophical institutions in Germany. The Philosophy of Science group works on the relations between science and society and engages in the practices of the life sciences. The group works closely with scientists in biology and medicine, and is part of the Institute for Interdisciplinary studies of science (I2SoS) at Bielefeld University.
Bordeaux
ImmunoConcept is an interdisciplinary CNRS research unit at the University of Bordeaux. Dedicated to the exploration of the immune system and many related biomedical questions, the unit is composed both of scientists and philosophers. The Conceptual Biology and Medicine Team, led by Thomas Pradeu and Maël Lemoine, aims to offer an enriched conceptualization, explanation, and modelling of biological processes.
Cambridge
The Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Cambridge is the largest department for History and Philosophy of Science in the UK. PhilInBioMed members from Cambridge include Hasok Chang, Tim Lewens, and Jacob Stegenga.
Cincinnati
The Department of Philosophy at the University of Cincinnati is one of the main centers for the study of philosophy of biology, philosophy of cognitive science, philosophy of mind, and general philosophy of science in the USA. PhilInBioMed collaborates notably with Tom Polger and Angela Potochnik.
Exeter
Egenis (University of Exeter, UK) dedicates to researching the nature, historical precedents, and philosophical, social, and scientific implications of the modern biosciences. Internationally recognized for its strongly interdisciplinary research culture, Egenis pioneers new approaches to understanding all aspects of the life sciences. The Director of Egenis is Professor John Dupré.
KLI
The KLI is an international center for advanced studies in theoretical biology, with a focus on the development and evolution of biological and cultural complexity. The KLI supports theoretical research primarily in the areas of evolutionary developmental biology and evolutionary science. The President of the KLI is Gerd Müller.
IHPST
The Institut de Philosophie des Sciences et des Techniques (IHPST, UMR8590), founded in 1932, is one of the biggest research centers in logic, philosophy of science and history of science in France. It is affiliated with CNRS and Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University.
MBL
The History and Philosophy of Science Project (McDonnell initiative) at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, facilitates collaborations between history and philosophy of science (HPS) researchers and life scientists. McDonnell Foundation Fellow Kate MacCord is the Program Administrator. She also serves as PI on the project, together with MBL Fellow Jane Maienschein.
Minnesota
The Minnesota Center for Philosophy of Science advances research and graduate training in the philosophy of science and related studies of science and technology. The Director of the Center is Alan Love, Professor, Winton Chair in the Liberal Arts, at the Department of Philosophy, University of Minnesota.

The members of the IAS Research Centre for Life, Mind and Society (San Sebastian, Spain) study biological and complex artificial systems. The IAS is part of the Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science and other departments at the University of the Basque Country/ Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea. The Director of the IAS is Alvaro Moreno.
